Black Tie

What it means

Black tie traditionally means a tuxedo or dark formal suit with a bow tie or dark tie, and a floor-length gown, elegant midi, or a refined cocktail dress. Anything in that register is perfect.

Colour is welcome — think the soft, warm tones of a Mediterranean evening: terracotta, olive, dusty rose, deep blues, champagne. We kindly ask guests to avoid white and ivory, which are reserved for the bride.

A garden in June

• —The celebration unfolds on stone terraces — no grass in sight, so wear the heels you love. Comfort for a long night of dancing is the only rule.
• —June evenings are warm but soften after midnight in the hills; a light wrap, shawl, or jacket is a lovely idea — especially if you're staying for the afterparty.
• —Breathable, natural fabrics — silk, chiffon, lightweight wool — will keep you comfortable from the 5:00 PM ceremony through the last dance.
• —The ceremony is in an Orthodox church: shoulders covered during the service is appreciated — a wrap over a strapless gown does the job beautifully.
